From a newspaper clipping sent by alert reader Tom Matches, probably from the San Jose Mercury News. The clipping features a photo of a guy wearing what appears to be a contestant number on his chest -- except it's in Japanese -- and yelling. The full caption is:
Ryuta Sasahara, 27-year-old teacher, shows us the style that earned him first prize in the 1988 Year-End Loud Voices Contest in Tokyo Tuesday. This is the eighth annual outing in which contestants shout into a sound meter. Our man at the scene neglected to record exactly what was shouted by this year's 37 entrants. They usually add to the color of the event by screaming something about their favorite baseball teams or their least favorite politicians. Top prize this year was $400.
